I'm really pleased to have been invited to exhibit at this exclusive fair.  When dropping off my work I had a sneak preview of the other pictures; lots of beautiful and high standard artwork! It is a lovely town with inspiring architecture too.

The Lindisfarne Golspels

'From Carpet to Heaven' is the conclusion of my residency exploring the relevance of the Lindisfarne Gospels to Shieldfield today.

July 2013

The Lindisfarne Gospels combine the artistic styles of the different cultural and ethnic groups of the period to communicate a message of unity across the region. I have met with local people and explored the visual language of the area in and around Shieldfield. In my work I have reflected the connections between the Gospels and the local community, including imagery from the places I have visited: Circus Central, Caring Hands lunch club, Ian Darby Partnership, City of God Church, and Barney and Jude's cafe among others.

I have found the project fascinating and would be delighted to show you the resulting exhibition.

Ian Darby Partnership
Regeneration
The Ian Darby Partnership has built their office space within St Jude’s church.  The decoration of colourful crosses, semi-circles and zigzags contrasts with the metallic banisters and busy work spaces of the architects.   It is good to see the building not empty but being used to design new buildings including Winn Studios student flats in Shieldfield.

Barney & Jude’s

Re-defining  Walls
After the church building had been demolished, the church group of St   Barnabas and St Jude began to meet in a side chapel of the church hall.  They also started to look outwards and use their larger hall space as a community café called Barney and Jude’s.  The elderly are welcomed to Vintage and young people to live music events.  It is a vibrant and continually adapting space.  The people there have done doodles for the exhibition, expressing their thoughts on pattern, art, faith & community.
 Barney & Jude's café
The team of volunteers discussed their memories of reading the Gospels.  At some point in the life of each person, the character of Jesus had stood out in a striking way: his love, power, compassion, forgiveness, holiness.

Circus Central, Christ Church

I was inspired by visiting the beautiful building of Christ Church hall which is gradually being adapted to hold a circus space where people of all ages do acrobatics on the ribbons and ropes.

In the Lindisfarne Gospels Matthew and John’s carpet pages contain a pattern of bird forms around the central cross.  The cross is reminiscent of a tree or vine from which all creatures can have life and sustenance.   The shapes formed by the talented people entwined with the ribbons are reminiscent of this idea and gave a sense of both freedom and trust.

‘I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing… Now remain in my love’ Jesus (John 15)

Christ Church Congregation

‘Christ Church has something about it that attracts,’ says one of the members of the church.  Despite the challenges   of sharing the space with different groups & not having an organist, they stick together and each person plays their role in making the services continue to happen.

The reading that day was from John 21:1-19.  The disciples caught no fish all night but when Jesus came, their nets were filled with fish showing how Jesus provides   when we trust in him.

Caring Hands at Christ Church, Vintage at Barney and Jude’s, the Artist Lunch at the Holy Biscuit

Sharing a meal together is a key symbol of unity and an important time of friendship for the elderly at Christ Church and Vintage and for the artists at the Holy Biscuit as well as for Jesus and his disciples.  Jesus often cooked them a meal or broke and shared bread with them as a symbol of giving himself for them.

City of God Christian Centre

Reading the Gospels gives us access to God’s help

The African church community has moved round various buildings including the Holy Biscuit.  They now meet at the Blackfriar’s Centre but plan to buy their own building.  Instead of a building, it is the people and their enthusiastic, dedicated faith that make this church.  They shared how their prayers for healing, peaceful dreams & jobs are answered and heard a sermon on how we get access to God’s help through reading the Gospels, praying, fasting & worshiping.

The Biscuit Family

The Legacy for Art

Art created at all of these events has been combined together to make a Shieldfield Art Carpet for this exhibition.  I am aiming to do something similar to Eadfrith in the Lindisfarne Gospels who combined the Celtic, Anglo-Saxon & Roman styles of art.

“The Lindisfarne Gospels celebrate visually and symbolically the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of the entire British Isles and their widespread international contacts signalling that there is a place for everything and everyone within the new order and in the eternal and universal fabric of Creation.”  Michelle P. Brown, The Lindisfarne Gospels and the Early Medieval World, The British Library, 2011,p48

Painting For Fun, The Holy Biscuit

Creativity flourishes at the Painting for Fun class.  Art brings people together and gives them confidence, a means of self-expression & a new way of looking at things.

Biscuit Family Studios

There is a rich diversity of art in the local area.  Artists from local studios submitted work for an exhibition ‘Responding to The Book’ in April 2013.  Ranging from a traditional ‘hooky’ style carpet page to a biker’s jacket decorated with words from the Gospels, it showed the continuing legacy of the Lindisfarne Gospels for art in the area.

The Late shows

The Biscuit Factory likes to give all people access to art.  Through The Late Shows event, I showed people from continental Europe, people of Asian origins and local people how to re-create patterns form the Lindisfarne Gospels and adapt them to their own personal styles.

The Lindisfarne Gospels Project, Shieldfield

I am Artist in Residence for this project, based at The Holy Biscuit and inspired by The Lindisfarne Gospels Durham.

The book, written about 700AD, is returning to the North East to be on display in Durham in July alongside many events & exhibitions. (See
http://www.lindisfarnegospels.com/)

I am keen to explore their relevance for the people of Shieldfield: the elderly, students, different nationalities, artists, business people etc.

An exhibition of art by local artists will open 6th April alongside workshops & community events.

An exhibition of my own work in response to the Lindisfarne Gospel illuminations will open at the end of June.

The Lindisfarne Gospels

http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/sacredtexts/lindisfarne.html

The Gospels have exquisitely beautiful & intricate designs reflecting Celtic, Anglo-Saxon & Roman art.  They include animals hidden in abstract patterns, symbolic portraits, calligraphy & references to jewellery & metalwork.

They were originally written in the first two centuries AD by four writers to communicate the story of Jesus to people in different places & cultures.  Bishop Eadfrith then produced his illuminated version around 700AD on Lindisfarne Island.
